Competences is what binds the system together.
A resource possess a set of competences. The set is a priority list, i.e. the first is the one the resource is best suited at. For example the employee 'Steve French' possess the competences concrete craftsmand and bricklayer assistant.
A work team supplies a set of resources each defined by a competence. For example the Concrete Team consist of four resources, namely a concrete foreman and three concrete craftsmen.
An activity requires a set of resources, each defined by a competence. When an activity is initially created, the resources supplied by the work team upon which it is booked, becomes the resource requirements of the activity. The resource requirements of an activity may later be changed.
Competences are used by and when:
- The automatic resource allocation routine when allocation resources to activities.
- Moving a project along the schedule or inserting a template project into the schedule competences are used to determine which work teams can fulfill the resource needs of the activities.
- Calculating resource demand and supply for specific resource categories.
