This set of use cases gives you an idea of the effect of relative constraints.

Timescaled PERT charts

This picture illustrates Multi·Project·Planner's implementation of timescaled PERT charts.
The schedule belongs to a construction company.

Timescaled PERT chart.

A single project is highlighted and the interrelationships between its activities shown.

The tooltip describes the relative constraint between 'Roofing' and 'Pipes', saying that

  • 'Roofing' most finish no sooner that 5 days before 'Pipes' starts.
  • 'Roofing' most finish no later than the day 'Pipes' starts.

When dragging the project along the plan, the relative constraints are respected, ie when 'Roofing' meets an obstacle it will rest until the span between it and 'Pipes' reaches 5 working days, at which point it will start moving again.

The video Moving a project illustrates the point.
